A town that makes things and sells things
Grantham is a working town. Roughly one in five jobs is in wholesale and retail, and about one in seven is in manufacturing, which is unusual for a market town of 44,000. The industrial estates at Alma Park, Earlesfield and Gonerby Moor, and the Ellesmere Business Park, are full of engineering firms, food producers (Moy Park's poultry site at Gonerby Hill Foot is one of the biggest employers) and the trades that serve them. The Southern Relief Road, finished in 2021, opened up the King 31 employment site by the A1, so that list is growing.
The town centre is a different kind of business: independent shops along the High Street and Westgate, cafes, solicitors and accountants around St Peter's Hill, and the Friday and Saturday markets.
